Fun, flapjacks help raise money at Kiwanis Pancake Day in Abilene

Kiwanians Bill Hoogstra, 65. and Dennis Laster, 62, have helped serve about a million pancakes in their combined 51 years in the Kiwanis Club of Abilene. On Saturday, they added thousands to their numbers.

The club welcomed a crowd of about 5,000 to their 63rd annual Pancake Day at the Abilene Civic Center on Saturday. When the doors opened, a large crowd was waiting for the 160 Kiwanians and community volunteers to serve pancakes, sausages, syrup, coffee, tea, and chocolate and strawberry milk.

We have 17 griddles set up for cooking, Hoogstra said. The Pancake Day is about having good food, fun, and raising funds for youth programs.
